The Janiculum is a Roman hill, overlooking the right bank of the Tiber and whose maximum height is 88 meters. The eastern slope down to the river and at the base is the historic district of Trastevere, while the western, less steep, is the oldest part of the modern district of Monteverde.

The Villa Doria Pamphili, with its 184 hectares in size, is one of the largest parks in the city and in Rome. It originates from the country estate of a noble Roman family. It is also home to the official representative of the Italian government.

It is located west of the old town, in the administrative area of the Municipio XII. Nearby are the Trastevere area (approx 1 km east), the Vatican City (about 1 km) and the Villa Farnesina (about 1 km north-east). It is bordered on the north by the ancient Via Aurelia and is crossed in the middle of Via Leone XIII.

Designed by sculptor Alessandro Algardi and the painter Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi in the early seventeenth century, is one of the best preserved houses in the city. In 1960 it was divided into two distinct parts to the opening of the Via Olimpica, on the occasion of the Games of the XVII Olympiad.

Villa Pamphili is currently divided into three areas: the palace and gardens (pars urbana), the pine forest (pars fructuaria), and the farm (pars rustica).
